VFL: what a visual fault locator can show

Visible light helps check continuity and locate some faults in accessible sections.

Original infographic in Spanish. Open the image to zoom in; the article is available in both languages.

What the image shows

The infographic presents a visual fault locator and examples of visible red light under different fiber conditions. It also shows connector formats and a general use sequence.

What it does and does not indicate

A VFL can help locate discontinuities or places where light escapes. It does not itself measure insertion loss or certify link performance. Its usefulness depends on distance, jacket construction and accessibility.

Use with care

Never look into a fiber or connector or point the laser toward anyone's eyes. Identify the circuit before connecting, establish its status and follow the instrument's safety instructions.
